I was just thinking to my self today and while looking at my eisenhower dollar set, I thought last year was the 50th anniversary of the Eisenhower dollar. Yes it was; why then was there nothing to celebrate the occasion? Was it that there were too many other things going on? I must admit that the Ike dollar isn't one of my favorites but nothing, from what I remember, was even mentioned about the 50th. Well, I won't be around for the 100th anniversary, so I guess I will have to enjoy what I have. So, I thought I'd show one of my favorite Ikes and please feel free to show yours. Regards
As a circulating dollar coin, it really was just never accepted, so I think other than those that collect them, there isn't much ado about them. JMHO
High-grade examples can be challenging. Even CAC decided to start stickering them, (other than very few special varieties of other series, is the only "modern" coin they sticker) I always think this series looks significantly better in hand than in coin photos. The design is sort of "ugly" from an artistic point of view, but when I hold them in my hand, I really do love these coins. Here are two of mine:
Now that you guys have mentioned it (and commented) I don't think I have any Ikes in my photog files.........Pardon me while I go search (and photog) some.
I'll try and post some of mine later when I get home (a sick baby and a visiting mother in law will probably be more important... ) . I almost have a Date/MM set completed. Just need a few more coins to finish it off.
I read once a person will never be forgotten as long as someone remembers their name. I think millions still remember Dwight D. Eisenhower; however, I too think the rememberance of the coin's 50th should have been remembered. He truly is a great hero of the 20th century. I really do admire this man, and assembled a set based on that admiratoion.
