S mint Buffalo with straight ribbons...could be an early specimen. That would be fun!!

Thank you...this thread helps me answer my son's questions like "how rare are buffalo nickels?" Answer -- you'll probably get one every 3-5 boxes.

Does anyone know where I can find similar stats for Indian heads and other coins? Based on our own searching, I figure we get about 7-10 wheaties per box of pennies, but we have yet to find an indian head.

@dandan15 - your LWC count looks pretty average, so your hunts are producing the expected yield. As for IHCs, I have only found 4-5 in a number of years of searching. They look different so folks pluck them out of circulation - even non-collectors. I can't even guess how many cents I've looked at, but a fair number (over a million). Regarding Nickels, this thread will give you a good indication of what you could expect. Silver yields for me was probably one war nickel every two boxes. One Buffalo every 3 boxes. But that was about 3 years ago. I haven't CRHed in that time. So things will change; scarcity due to a number of factors but probably the biggest factor being the huge mintage numbers of the past decade relative to the years past. Since 1964 especially, for Jefferson nickels, the large mintage numbers make the smaller mintage numbers preceding that date appear even scarcer than they actually are. That's not to say that there aren't key dates/mms where mintage figures matter (1950D Jefferson, 1931S LWC). Enjoy the hunts with your son!! Great time together!

I'd have to reveal that S dated Buffalo right away. Could be the 13S type 2, the only 1 I'm missing acid treated (I bought them 25 cents each dateless out of a box).

Yeah...I wouldn't be able to wait either. As I reviewed the Buffalo nickels I had accumulated through CRH, I was wondering what I had in hand. On the 10th or so pickled nickel, I had myself a 1913 D Type 2 coin. By the time I was done pickling, I had 2 along with a number of other low mintage/semi-key Buffalo. It is rather interesting to reveal what passes through our hands. Being in the East, finding S mint coins is more difficult, but I was finding these amongst the pickled nickels. So I conclude that with the volumes being done on this 500 Box Challenge, there is an outside, but almost reasonable shot of putting together a mixed Buffalo set. And as such...I am anxious to see the reveal and watch that progress too.

Note: 1965 is not a proof- none made that year, or 1966 & 1967.

    Could be an SMS

Yeah the strike is just to strong on the coin to be a regular business strike. Has that proof mirror finish. But yeah you are correct. SMS for sure :)

I've found SMS coins in a CRH event. If it has that in between finish (well struck, VEDS business strike and proof), I'd lean to it being an SMS coin.

What do you think is goi g on with this nickel. First has nothing readable on it. So I figured it is just worn to death. Then I noticed that all around the edges front and back looks like a lamination error. Your opinions are most welcome. I know it’s worthless. But I’m curious. Thanks in advanced.

The rim appears to have a strong raise on it. I wonder if this could potentially be a capped die?
