A very nice box with a interesting error. For now we will leave it at a collar error. I have come across collar errors in the past coming years but none with a triple line. So far this is my favorite coin from the 500 box hunt. I love finding coins that make you think! But I figured going through 1,000,000 Nickles in a year we are bound to find some very interesting pieces :)

Geez! Just like that 39D I posted this coin deserves it's own post. It doesn't have the strongest strike but is BU. A lot of the 55P have this weak washed out look to them but this is a very nice example. image.jpeg This coin is thick with a sharp rim. Has that same bronze color as the 39D and a lot of luster.

I love pulling these coins out before they get destroyed by circulation.

It's a fine specimen! I wondered if there were two masters used in that year or since it was the end of the ODV, the master/working dies were used up.

I wondered that too. It would make sense.

I took a look at my nickel roll of 55's. Predominantly the washed out look but several crisp specimens. Comparing it to the ODV at Variety Vista, the same ODV (per the queue). Even found a missorted 53 in the roll. Nobody to blame for that but me.

Did you weigh the one with the collar error? Are you sure it doesn't come apart? Was just wondering if it could be a "spy coin" .

First thing I did when I found it. Nope. Not a magic/spy coin. Weighs exactly 5.0 grams.

Master List Updated After 123 Boxes Completed

We are averaging one silver every 1.57 box. Pretty much every box and a half we are finding silver. Not too bad. Lets see if we can get that number closer to 1.25 by the end of this!

    Lets Have A Little Fun!!!

Out of all the thousands of nickle boxes I have searched over the years I have never weighed my rolls before opening them. I wanted to pull out the heaviest rolls and the littiest rolls to see what we get. Below are the stats.

Average roll weighed between 199.7 to 200.3 Grams

We only got two heavy rolls in this box

    200.4 Grams
    200.8 Grams

    We got 6 light rolls

    199.1 Grams
    199.1 Grams
    198.1 Grams
    197.9 Grams
    197.2 Grams
    194.6 Grams

None of the rolls appear larger or smaller than each other.

I would bet the two heavy rolls have a extra nickel. I would also assume we will unfortunately find some Lincoln cents in the light rolls.

Place yah bets! I will have this box posted tomorrow.

Your coin photos look consistently awesome. If you don't mind, what is your process for photographing coins?

The two heavy rolls each have the grimiest, most corroded nickels. The really light roll may have a foreign coin that slipped in. That's my best bet.

All from CRH and till hunting (except 1950-D) It would take a lifetime to find all the buffaloes without buying them, would it not?

Sometime ago my phone died on me and I had to purchase a new phone. I posted my bad luck on this thread back in November. I wasn't happy about my phone breaking but it seemed to work for the better. When I purchased my new phone it came with a better camera. As I was taking photos I wondered what else this new "smart phone" can do? So I downloaded a photoshop app. I edit every photo you see to try to bring out the best quality of the coin then edit out the background to give the coin that nice white professional look.

Don't think anyone loves nickels like I do :)

With the time hunting 10-12 boxes a week, editing the photos, and posting on here I would guess 40+ hours a week of fun. On top of my 40+ hour work week.

But I have always wanted to do 500 boxes in a year. And when I decided to do so I wanted to start a thread to track my progress. I also wanted to make sure people who see this get some clear pictures. If this thread is here 50 years from now I want people to enjoy the coins as much as I do.
