I have yet to find or own a V nickel. I would be excited to find one in a box! Congrats!

I've gone thru about 5-6 nickel boxes this year and will probably up it to maybe 10-15 next year. I don't have a dump bank, so for nickels, I use them in the self service lanes like at Walmart and grocery stores. But the machines are not reliable for handling more than about 20.00 in nickels on any one trip. I am going to do a lot of quarters next year. I did seven boxes of halves this year and they were skunk, so not doing more of those. I did have to resort to rolling most of the halves and slowly feeding them to one of my banks (they only will take ten rolls per day). For me, quarters are the easiest to pass at most places. Almost no business really minds getting 10-20 in quarters, because they handle so much in change. I've gone into liquor stores and gas stations and had the managers 'buy' my quarters from me to the tune of 70-100 $ or more, and some do it because their banks charge them to give them lots of rolls of change, as a business cost.

The 39d looks to be a reverse of 38.

It is. There is a breakdown in Cherrypickers that suggests which reverse is more desirable. I don’t recall off hand but there was a potential conflict of information presented by the author.

I dug into the RDV question a little more and although this information is a bit dated...it's what I've got. Keep in mind that these are based on East Coast finds, so they may loosely apply to those in the center and West Coast.

    - For 1939, the rarer RDV 1938 are more valuable
    - For 1939D, the rarer RDV 1938 are more valuable
    - For 1939S, the rarer RDV 1940 are more valuable

This was the data that applied to findings:

    1939(P): 40 w/RDV 1938 / 278 w/RDV 1940

    - 12.5% of my 1939 CRH finds were with RDV 1938
    - (1) 1939 was a Henning nickel

    1939D: 4 w/RDV 1938 / 10 w/RDV 1940

    - 28.5% of my 1939 CRH/Auction finds were with RDV 1938

    1939S: 9 w/RDV 1938 / 3 w/RDV 1940

    - 75% of my 1939 CRH/Auction finds were with RDV 1938

It would be interesting to know what someone in the middle of the country has for a ratio of RDV 1938 vs. RDV 1940 1939Ps and what another member here from the West Coast has for a ratio of 1939Ps. The numbers I have for D and S are too small to generate a meaningful ratio, but it would be nice to know those ratios too if they are available.

Just to give everyone a tip on the two reverse hubs of 39 if you havent noticed before. On the reverse of 38, the last letter of Pluribus, the S, has no serif. On the reverse of 40, it has a serif at the top closest to the rim. Even on coins of very low grade it can be seen. I made my observation from multiple examples of each reverse graded by PCGS in high grade plus proofs of both reverses and compared to examples from both 1938, which can only be the reverse of 38, and 1940, which can only be from the reverse of 1940 with the exception of the rare reverse of 38 proof. There are some other minor differences, but the serif or lack of serif and the step detail in high grade examples is the defining differences. If someone can take detailed photos of the S on both reverses and post them, i believe it would be helpful to the group.
