    This 1773 Virginia halfpenny is one of the very few coin types that were struck specifically for use in the colonies:

    Under the Articles of Confederation, the individual states were allowed to strike their own coinages, and several did. This Massachusetts copper features a fairly well-drawn Native American and a terrible attempt at an eagle:

    And the obverse of this New Jersey coin features a plow and what is either a horse's head or the Loch Ness Monster:
