The arrows were placed there to note the reduction in weight, a tenth of a gram lighter. This was done accordance with the Act of February 32, 1853.</p><p><br /></p><p>A whopping 13,210,020 were minted. I believe that’s the highest mintage of all types of Half Dimes. There is an 1853 of Variety 2 but the arrows are the key here.</p><p><br /></p><p>In my photo the gray or cloudy areas are actually a very pale light blue in hand.
