I thought it was determined in here that no coins were actually minted from shell casings. The shells were gathered but they were never recycled is my understanding.
Well there are records of the shell casing arriving at the mint daily by the railroad car load, so if they weren't recycling them what were they doing with them? Also the amount of copper allocated to the mint by the war production board wasn't enough to have allowed for the production of the number of cents they made, so if they were using the shellcases where did the other copper come from?

I know the mint had the capability for cold roll milling but did it also have the capabilities (blast furnaces and the like) required to process spent (scrap) shell casings into finished brass sheet coils or ingots?
