well....if you like eagles you'll probably like these two. The first `eagle has two heads. ;)

Steve, that coin from Frankfurt is actually a 2 Vereinsthaler. If you noticed it contains a reference to '15 one pound fine',instead of '30 one pound fine',which meant that 30 Thalers could be struck from a pound of silver.

They are both from Frankfurt. The first is interesting to me in that it was issued in 1622 and bears the titles of Ferdinand II as Holy Roman Emperor around the imperial two headed eagle (reverse). If you look closely the Franfurt eagle is at the centre (obverse) and the legend reads `New money of the Republic of Frankfurt 1622' (ie Moneta Nova Reip. Francofurtensis 1622). Two eagles, one of which has two heads :)

The second is indeed a zwei (two ) thaler. Although I truly love the coin, and the design, at times I think the eagle on the reverse looks more like a throttled chicken than anything else. ;)

Steve,if you want to get a translation of the German-language inscriptions on coins & banknotes, please feel free to email either Christian or Antidote,& they will help you.

Among the coins I have been forced to off-load is a Double Vereinsthaler from Prussia dated 1840A.It is a coin with a very nicely toned reverse, but unfortunately, has mount marks on the obverse of the coin.I had bought it a few years back as a spacefiller in the Prussian section of my German States coin collection.I paid around NZ$150 for it.

    Aidan.
