1.) Domitian - I got this as a higher grade coin than the one I currently have. Still low grade though. Picked it up for $10. 2.) Faustina I - Same story as the first. I needed a better coin. The first Faustina I I could not fully attribute. 3.) Probus - I don't have this reverse type. I think it may be possible to clean this coin and bring otu some details. 4.) Kushan Vima Kadphises - This coin is way off my collection grid but I really like it, so I got it. I can attribute all but #4. I may need some help with that one. I'm also using this post as a scratchpad of sorts to help me attribute these coins. Those are the dealer photos. The coins will be mailed to me next week.
And the roll continues! Four very pleasing coins... I like the Vima Kadphises and don't have one myself, but the two big bronzes are very nice too.
Boy, Gill---There's no holding you back anymore ....You're on one heck of a roll (Notice I used all 'Leave it to Beaver' language and exclamations ) I think you did exceptionally well---but I'm absolutely no help to you on your last coin---although it does greatly interest me....
#4 depends on what you mean by attribute. Mitchiner has 3006-3046 with some really minor legend differences where you have no legends. You could rule out many since you have the medial club near elbow. Pinning down a certain number from any of the specialist texts (most of which I don't have) will require details long gone.
Well, what I mean by attribute is both writing out the details and getting a reference number for it. To me, getting the details right in the description as best as possible is important.
http://www.worldofcoins.eu/forum/index.php?topic=29574.0 You might enjoy the above page. I have not seen a coin with the dual sex characteristics shown there. You lack legend but have as clear a figure of Shiva as I've seen. Other than legend, the distinctions include the angle of the club shown below 'medial' top and 'lateral' bottom. Why this is important, I do not know.
Atta boy, Daryl => 4 winners => keep 'em coming, my coin-friend!! Ummm, I'm assuming that you already had other examples of the three Romans, so you didn't increase your amazing 101 ruler count?!! I have examples of all 4 coins/rulers, but the cool kids seem to be posting the Kushan-coin, so I'm gonna pile-on and post my sweet example ... INDIA, Kushan: Vima Kadphises, AE tetradrachm circa 112-127 AD Diameter: 28 mm Weight: 16.88 grams Obverse: King standing facing, sacrificing at altar left, tamgha and club in right field, Greek legend around: BACIΛEVC BACIΛEWN CWTHP MEΓAC OOhMO KAΔΦICHC Reverse: Oesho (Siva) standing facing, Bull Nandi behind, nandipada at left, Kharoshthi legend around: maharajasa rajadirajasa sarvaloga isvarasa mahisvarasa vima kathphishasa tratara Reference: Göbl 762, MAC 3033 Other: 12 o'clock => a choice specimen with good legend and the king's name spelled fully (OOhMO KAΔΦICHC). Hard to find examples nicer than this ... for the record (and not surprisingly), all of the info is from the seller
Nope, I did not increase my ruler count. Just got some more coins that I liked and the Kushan coin I definitely never had one before. The Domitian is better than the one I have right now. The Faustina I is also better than the one I have right now. Faustina I Domitian
Your coin is pretty nice and I don't doubt there ain't many nice than yours, Steve. I think mine is pretty good for what I paid. I had a choice between two coins, that Kushan coin or this Thessalian Confederation Greek coin. I chose the Kushan coin.
Domitian AE As. OBV: IMP CAES DOMIT AVG GERM COS XVI CENS PER P P, Laureate head right. REV: MONETA AVGVSTI, Moneta standing left, holding scales and cornucopiae. REF: RIC 756, Cohen 333. As I said I'm attributing the coins here. Kind of makes it easier and you guys can also decide if it's right or not.
My only Domitian (and one of my top favorite coins in my collection). Domitian, Roman Empire (revalued under the Ostrogothic Kingdom) AE As/42 nummi Obv: CAESAR AVG F DOMITIAN COS II, laureate head left, countermark XLII (42) in left field Rev: VICTORIA AVGVST, Victory advancing right, standing on prow, holding wreath and palm branch, S-C across fields Mint: Rome (struck 73-74 AD; revalued 498-526 AD) Ref: RIC 677
I am not happy with my Vilma Kadphises photo. Instead I will just tell ya great choice and I like the Kushan the best. This is one of my favorite reverses from Kanishka. OADO
