My wife and I made another yarn and coin trip today. This one was to the other side of Houston, about 50 miles. I was not expecting to find much after our trip to the NYINC last week, but ... I did see an interesting tray of anonymous follis (someone please clue me into the correct plural for follis). They were offered by a dealer who often has a tray or two of ancient coins, but seldom coins I want. Today he had two interesting trays, one with the coins below and a second with hammered 8 reals. I went for the Byzantine ones. Some of them almost had noses. PS - how many of you know the definition of nimbate? I forgot and had to look up the answer. "Nimb" is an obsolete form of the noun, but not a verb, except that the obsolete "nimbated", like the commoner "nimbate", means "furnished with a nimbus". It is sometimes preferred by art-historians, as sounding more technical than halo. wikipedia
Sweet!! ... congrats rrdenarius, you nailed a couple of OP-winners!! I am always a bit jealous when I hear tales of folks attending actual "live shows" ... must be kinda cool? Oh, sorry => Sev-Alex => man, that's a great example (sweet snout credit) Ummm, I have a couple of nimbate-examples (but you're correct => snouts are hard to come-by!!)
It is funny how crude a lot of these Byzantine pieces are, but I guess they have their own sort of charm. Steve, is that middle one gilt?
