Tommy, my son and I were into wavy steps and trail dies. Both at the same time. For over a year. Until you try those out, you're as sane as they come, trust me when I tell you. :)

To me, the real question is not why there are 100 DDs, but rather what process change affected only 2009 such that there are 100 DDs. It's almost as if each die is unique.

Was this the 1st time that dies were being cut directly on the CNC machines and did the mint have problems with the process? One thing that could cause doubling is if the cutting needed to be restarted (I've seen this on the wife's embroidery [sewing] machine).

I know all about headaches. It took me 4-1/2 years to search a $50 Mint bag of 1980 Lincoln cents because I got headaches.

The point is if you can't see a doubled die without the aid of the USB scope, then the doubled die shouldn't be noteworthy.

I hear that, lol. Just starting to do trail dies on newer coins from 2013 up. There's plenty of them on the 2017 P cents. LIB in Liberty, 7 in the date and too many to list here on the 2009's. I change up from the 2009's every now and then to stay sane.

Bob Neff started us on that. We sent a coin to him he sent to an expert to determine whether it was a Class 6 DDO. It was a 1926 cent. The results came back for the most part "undetermined," but not without a slew of 2009s with extra thumbs, all labeled, all in clear flips. This was my son's coin, and Bob didn't want to let him down by just returning the cent. Since then, Bob is like my son's idol. I had to go with him to Bob's website and read all about wavy steps and trail dies and explain what those were. I "get it," buddy. Believe me when I say. And thanks for taking the gentle ribbing like it was intended.
