Hmmm. so you are in denial that you are addicted... Seems like you are from here, but I think it is spending your money wisly. Sparingly plays no part in my colection though.

I had fun reading about how others got into collecting. Now that the contest is over I would like to share my story. I had complications at birth and was born 80% deaf. It wasn't until I had surgery/tubes in my ears and years of speech therapy that I could properly communicate. Many days were spent in my backyard digging in the sandbox and hanging out with my Golden Retriever "Chesapeake."

An interest in coins came around 4-5 years old. I used to go with my mom to piggly wiggly's grocery store. The highlight was looking at lobsters in a tank and getting a donut every time. On my way out I noticed there was a coin store. My mom took me inside, and I was absolutely fascinated by what I saw. The coins were mesmerizing. Everything reminded me of my favorite cartoon at the time "Lost Empires of Gold." The first coin that I bought was an 1876 (Seated Liberty Quarter). Pretty soon I was picking weeds and loading up buckets of acorns to earn a trip to the coin store. Sadly at 7 we moved to Japan. Didn't get back into it until 2 years ago (Another Story).

I believe the reason I am so passionate about it is the fond memories of how happy it made me feel as a child.

(This is the actual first that I ever bought in 1988)

Well I am really thrilled about winning the Belgium coin ( my first ). Thank you so much koen for the chance to enter. I have been thinking about starting a collection of foreign coins since I read your post in Jason contest a few weeks ago. Your story was a great inspiration to me and I am sure to all who read.

    PM sent. Best regards,

    Dave

Congrats Dave~! Hey Koen, I read this post about a week or so ago, and forgot about it. Also I really had to search hard to find this exact coin. For some reason I had it in my mind that it was always a worn seated liberty half.

I'd imagine he did not want to win the coin, or did not want to spoil anybody else's chances at winning...

Looks like my son has been forgetting to let me in on the contests.

How I started collecting: I have been collecting since I got out of high school. I had a few coins I would start putting aside because they made me intrigued or were different. I accumulated a bunch of franklins that my son spent while in the 5th grade, some WL halves, junk silver and wheat cents. I have not been interested into the coins until somewhat recently my son got me back into collecting and harder than ever. I don't collect for an investment, but for the fun and art in coins. I have picked up several hundreds of foreign coins that have just spoken to me because they are beautiful and cheap. I am a fan of Cuban, Russian, British, US, Canadian, and German coinage (not necessarily in that order) So far, I have only invested a couple hundred into my collection, but I plan on accumulating a lot more.
