As another posted said, I like it, but the splotch on the front kind of ruins it for me.

    This is true.

I've always said if I strike it rich, I would go to Harlan Berk's and Freeman and Sear's pages and just put everything in my shopping cart without reading descriptions.

You know you'll be getting quality coins.

Both of the reverses throw me . IMO they offset the attractivness of the obverses. The cash that was laid out on those was REDIC & it seems to be waaay too much . I would not be surprised if these are put back up very soon because of a non paying bidder.

If you think this is bad, how about the folks paying many times more for 60's full steppers. Now you really gotta love your Jefferson's.

There's no way I would pay even half of that amount (I'm not sure what the hammer price was...did someone say $1880?). For that amount, I could get a Barber Half, Walking Liberty Half, SLQ, Mercury Dime, Matte Proof Lincoln, or Buffalo Nickel that looks 10x better than that nickel, and still have some substantial change leftover change.

But to each his own! :)

As much as I really enjoy war nickels......NO way, but I admitt I have paid some crazy prices

  14. That makes a heck of a lot more sense than some color.

To answer Greg and Paul's comments, as they are both Jefferson aficionados. I have no pretense as such, since I've never collected Jeff. Nickels--they just aren't my thing. However, as an experienced collector(particularly of toned Morgans, Kennedys and Frankies), the coin appears to have significant eye appeal to me. I don't know that much about the different kinds of toning on Jeffs so, mine would be a broader, more general collector of toned coins' observation. To me, it does definitely look like NT, but it is, admittedly, an unusual pattern. The obverse and the reverse do not match--perhaps it could have been in an album, and in a bag in a different locale before being slabbed? Just a guess, but it does have some eye appeal. Is it the prettiest Jeff Nickel I have ever seen? By no means--I think both Greg and Paul have better looking ones, for eye appeal. Both of them have posted better looking ones here. I am sure they both have better looking ones for grade as well. So, my comment would be OVERPRICED, no matter how much money one has to spend. It has pretty good availability in grade (1679) and as I said before, I am sure there are just as attractive ones around that are priced far more sanely. As regards somebody buying it, they're not buying exclusivity for sure, as the mintage is high, and the pops in high grades make it pretty certain that some other attractive Jeff of that date is out there.

I agree and I think some that he has posted are much nicer than the original coins. Especially if he gets some bidders like this past auction.
