I recently picked up 3 new Tetradrachms, 2 are of Gallienus. I have several already but something about these attracted me to them & from what I can gather, despite being rated R1 in Emmett, I couldn't find many of them, especially the one with the Athena reverse. The Numerian I picked up because I liked the reverse type. Gallienus (253 - 268 A.D.) Egypt, Alexandria Billon Tetradrachm O: AVT K Π ΛIK ΓAΛΛIHNOC CЄB, laureate and cuirassed bust right R: Homonoia seated left, right hand raised, left holding double cornucopia; IB/L to left, palm frond to right.Dated RY 12 (AD 264/265). 10.67g 22mm Köln 2923; Dattari (Savio) 5249; K&G 90.80; Emmett 3817.12. Nice coins Mat! Very sharp examples for what are typically very mushy coins. Nice to see whole legends along with sharp reverses.
Great coins, I love Alexandrian coins. Actually no, they're terrible and nobody should buy them... but me. I have one of those! Here's my Aurelian and below is my Numerian: Aurelian Milne 4093 Numerian Emmett 4018
Nice examples, @Mat ! I think the style of the portraits of Gallienus from Alexandria are the finest in all of numismatics. The workmanship at all of the other mints was just terrible at the time. I acquired this one for the portrait (it obviously wasn't for the reverse).
Great Billons, @Mat ! I very enjoy watching your parade of Tets... you find great ones, and great prices. Congrats!
Here's my Numerianus: Numerian, Feb/March 283 - Oct/Nov 284 A.D. Roman Provincial Egypt Billon Tetradrachm, 8.26 grams, 20.7 mm, Alexandria mint Obverse: AK M A NOVMEPIANOC CEB Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right Reverse: Athena seated left on high backed throne, wearing crested helmet, long scepter in left hand, Nike offering wreath in right hand. Reference: Köln 3192-3193; Dattari 5607, Emmett 4013; Sear 12272 I particularly enjoy the patina on this coin, as well as the finely crafted reverse.
