I have a 2001 P North Carolina State Quarter with three P’s. Is this a known error? You can see 2 mint marks on the front, and one on the back.
Not possible. Hard to tell from pic of reverse but I'm betting on a scratch or die chip there! IMO Welcome to CT BTW.
Veston, that was fast ! We would need to see a better photo, closer up, of the Mintmark, and of the area on the reverse where you think you see another Mintmark.. Based on the one photo of the MM, I don't see any doubling. I'm guessing that the one you see on the reverse is just a 'hit' or contact mark.
Thanks for the replies. I’ll see if I can post better pictures this afternoon. I swear you can clearly see three “P’s.” I have the same quarter with only the normal MM. hmmmmm
I think I see what you're referring to on the reverse : above the wing and below the F in First ? If that's it, it's just a contact mark where something hit the coin. Sometimes we see what we want to see regardless of what's really there. No offense. I see nothing out of the ordinary on the obverse. However, Listen to Fred. He is the expert here.
I'm not the expert here. I'm one of the folks who has some experience and background regarding the minting process and mint errors, but there are numerous others here with the same knowledge, if not more. I might have -seen- more than most, but that's about it.
If you are referring to the blob in front of Washington's lips, it appears to be a die chip. Is it raised?
Just curious, do you imagine there are random P mintmarks floating through the air at the Mint, or what? How could these phantom extra P mintmarks possibly happen?
What I imagine is, that you’re probably an extremely ignorant and insecure individual. You would call it being “blunt.” I’m not blind. I made an appointment with my dealer.
Please let us know what the dealer says after you show him the coin at your appointment. And, the person you attacked is very knowledgable and experienced. No one said you were blind. We are just saying that what you say or think you see is not what you think it is, or say it is. It's your coin, so you are welcome to believe anything you'd like to about it - but that doesn't make it what it's not. Plain and Simple.
I am NOT here, or ANYWHERE, to soothe people’s feelings. You have a numismatic “nothingburger”. You can find "happy talk lies" all over the Internet, sometimes even from members here, but I'll never BS you with a "ooh, could be" unless it is.
No he is not ignorant. Yes, he is blunt. It is technically impossible to have random extra letters placed anywhere on any coin since 1990 when the Mint stopped hand punching mint marks. It is possible someone with a punch set placed extra letters or numerals on a coin but that is post mint damage. If you are serious about this hobby then just do some due diligence and read up on how the Mint makes coins. And if you still insist your coin is what you say, then send to a TPG at great cost to you just to have it returned in a body bag. There are no ponies to pet here. It is what is.
Wait, what? No more ponies?!?!? I'm going to have to reassess this. I was promised two things now that haven't delivered - flying cars and now no ponies in the coin hobby? What's a guy to believe in any more? I need to go watch YouTube videos, and my phone will be in "Do Not Disturb" mode.
But, but, but...there were flying cars in Back To The Future. I hope you're not telling me they were fake?
Come on guys If you look closely You can clearly see circular air marks leading up to the blob. The blob is clearly a spitwad that George has spit out through the Prototype Series 1000 liquid metal that coins are made of nowadays in order to create additional “after mint” marks. Unfortunately, it all happens after after the mint so it is considered a “ghost” mark or PMD. Adds no additional value. I’m just joking its Just plain damage by someone. Stop wanting to “will” damage to be something it’s not. Good luck at the dealer.
