Hi all, This is coin #9 of my NGC submissions that I received back. This one was a huge disappointment for me!!! I sent it as a Mint Error but they did not think so. To me it is a Partial Collar aka Railroad Rim They attributed it as RIM DAMAGE I included my raw pictures Do not enjoy LOL
I don't know, paddy! The outer clad layer looks a tiny bit smaller in diameter than the copper core. I would think that when the coin was struck that the clad layer and the copper core would expand equally. I think NGC got it right. This might be someone's attempt to cut away part of the rim and edge to create a magician's coin. Chris
Hmmm. The edge pictures look good. Can they tell if someone machined part of the rim away? Seems like a lot of work for nothing.
I don't want to wreck the dream either but is it possible someone tooled this for a custom made bezel? Just a thought and I'm probably wrong. Hope so.
It wouldn't be the first time that we've seen half of a magician's coin that someone screwed up. Chris
OK guys.. I don't ever want to be a stubborn error coin guy.. I will keep your opinions in mind. I have been wrong before.. Thanks!
My biggest question is this.. In the past when a coin was submitted to NGC to get attributed as a Mint Error and it was not the case they would Body Bag it.. Remember that? They would not even bother to insert it into a slab and would give you a loose label stating that it was altered to resemble an error.. So this is their new procedure?
Stubborn? Heck no! I really enjoy seeing your error coins. At least you're nowhere near "0 for 1" like so many others are. As a matter of fact, I think we should all get together and ask Peter to pin a special thread to the top of the Error Coins forum devoted specifically to..............Paddy's Error Coins. Chris
As far as I know, putting the coin in a Details slab is the new procedure. Prior to this one, when was the last time that you had an error coin body-bagged because it wasn't an error? Chris
Here is a thread I created March 2015 - you even responded to it! https://www.cointalk.com/threads/post-mint-damage-when-its-not-an-error-ngc-rejects.261664/
I'm not laughing, but I am learning! Maybe NGC has since decided that it would be better to encapsulate these instead of having customers complain that they got nothing for their money. Send those others back for official review and encapsulation. Chris
Correct me if I'm wrong but if this were a partial collar error the reeded part of the edge which was contained by the collar would be stepped under the smooth part of the edge which would be basically broad struck above it. The rim of this coin looks to be tooled down.
