That is what is nice about collecting. Collect what you like and want to buy. The Lincoln cent will be the sleeper, along with the Kennedy. The cent is half the mintage of the 1909S VDB. There are millions of Lincoln collectors that will someday decide they need the coin to complete their sets. I am not in it for the money. I collect because I like the coins.
I think what you underestimate is the number of people who buy multiple sets when it comes to proof sets and in so doing, overestimate the number of buyers for proof sets in general. There are probably close to or less than 250,000 collectors for these sets, so I think in order to sell out you either have to: a) sell multiple sets to people or b) create a set that appeals to more than just the collectors of annual sets.
I ordered the enhanced Sets on 8/1, the Mint's website shows they were shipped 8/2 and here it is 8/8/17 and I still didn't get them.
Yes, as of an hour or two ago. I missed out during the first online round, bought a set off eBay for $60, then saw a Coin World post saying they were back up, and bought five more.
My 8/1 set arrived y'day. Kinda like it, especially how they made the water on the Ozark and Ellis Island quarters shiny in contrast to the otherwise matte finish.
i used to buy only ONE proof and ONE mint set each year - then i started to notice toning or milk sorts or carbon spots....so i began to order two - then my nephew became interested so i started ordering three - at three, i began to examine the sets more closely and began to notice scratches or other assorted quality issues...so now i'm up to 5 or more of each set and have begun to send back those that don't meet my standards - quality though is the REAL issue that i buy multiple sets - it's amazing how much the quality can differ from one proof / mint set to another - and that's just within the same year!
The question I have is how many people got shut out, ordered for $50 on eBay, or just never found out the sets are available again. There are still a lot of coin collectors who don't follow the hobby on the net and probably don't know the sets are still available. Look at it this way, we still have people who are on this forum popping in and finding out the sets are not sold out. What chance does someone who isn't on these sites have of finding out?
incidentally - re: ellis island new jersey quarter - on the reverse - on the rim next to the roof of the house - there seems to be a SMUDGE of some sort on EVERY SINGLE one - can't tell exactly what is it - has anybody else noticed this - it's ONLY on that ONE quarter, but it's on EVERYONE...also - noticed some tiny pin size black spots on sone of the coins - on two of the halves - one spot on the neck - one in the field - one spot on the neck of the dime - one spot on the field on the dollar - all different coins from different sets...anybody know what these are? will they GROW like the blob and eventually take over the coins (and then the house, the world and hopefully the U.S. Mint? (smile) - thanks!
MARRIAGE, my friend, is "POWER" - anything i need to know - just ask the wife - she knows EVERYTHING! (usually!) and of course...she's NEVER wrong! (haha)
LOL. I don't have the impression that they're getting many large orders at this point. I wonder if someone got mad because a number of larger orders were getting canceled?
A number of people buying multiples are dealers who by 10, 20, 50 to sell at shows AND to break-up into the individual coins to sell in their 2x2 books. Do you count that as 1 buyer or 50 based on the eventual sell through?
