After seeing pictures of this set, I had to place an order. I'll just claim it as a late graduation gift... to myself...
They've been selling them for almost five days straight now since the initial offering and then return.
The real question of real demand .... 225,000 gone in 6 minutes or whatever ... and yet 20,000 extra have been on sale for over 5 days. and ebay prices have gotten down to just breakeven if you look hard enough.
wonder if any of the 30,000 sets that mike at HSN claimed to have purchased will be returned? at $350 a set - hope they're all returned to HIM!
LOL! Did the sound of my cutting my own throat echo that far off into the distance? These sets are STILL Available and I suspect the reason why is that, well, they just did not turn out to be anything special. Fairly boring and, IMO, a typical Modern Coin Mint Product right up there with CnClad Proof Sets! Oh Well.........
I only purchased two sets for my own collection. They just came in today and they do look very nice. I'm glad I was able to pick them up when I did. I hope everybody who wanted a set is able to get one now they're back on sale at the US Mint.
I ordered mine on the 1st and it shipped the next day. I'm not getting it until today... The Mint's default ground shipping is pretty awful. It should be free...
I think that the reason has less to do with the product, and more to do with the sellers. This is a Mint Set. Less than 350,000 sets sold last year. People saw a Mint product with a mintage of 250,000 and vastly overestimated the demand. They thought there was a flipping opportunity, but I don't think that one exists without a total sellout that shuts the regular buyers out. That's why I think they're still available. There just aren't that many buyers for this particular product. Had the Mint done a better job on the coins, there might be buyers who don't normally buy this kind of thing, but given the coins and their blase design, most non-Mint set buyers have just said, "No, thanks."
To each their own.....but these once again the U.S. mint has out done itself to produce a set of coins or mint some of the ugliest coins ever produced! Just when you thought they couldn't get any worse they do. I've been done with any purchases for years now.....from the mint. I think I rather collect washers......sad .
I'm having a conundrum now. I actually ordered 20 sets. 10 for me, and my local buds. The other sets were for those on this site that may have missed out on them. So... by now, anyone that wanted one probably already acquired it. My question is, what to do with the other 10 sets??? I suppose I could sit on them with a sour taste in my mouth. LOL. whatcha think, maybe worth sitting on? Put on EBAY with some clever title (!!! un-searched !!!, "RARE") oh yeah, "SUPER FAST SELLOUT". So... what do you think???
Proof sets sell significantly more than mint sets. The lowest modern proof set mintage is still more than double that of the enhanced set. This particular set doesn't really fall into either category. However, it is a special finish with a price and presentation similar to a proof set. I believe that there are a lot of proof set collectors out there that will want to add this one to there collections. Also, it takes many months to over a year to sell 100,000's of mint and proof sets. I don't think you can directly compare annual sets sales to this set after only a week.
