The sales launch for this set was very odd. Supposedly it was a six-minute sellout. The set has reopened for sales several times with additional unsold or not spoken for sets placed on sale once again. The rumor about the 20,000-set order being cancelled is also very odd. I know fellow members have taken the Mint to task about low mintages and lightning fast sellouts, the size of dealer lots, etc. and the collector who wants just one being shut out. I can accept a popular coin or set and a rapid sellout. I rarely disagree with the Mint's sales practices, but this time...it is all a bit too strange for me.
I don't doubt the 6 minute sell out initially. People were excited for it. I also don't doubt that there have been a lot of cancellations now that people have seen what they really look like. Regardless there's always some that get canceled from a CC rejection and usually at least a few end up back on sale from that. Just remember too, Denver is a long show and the big boys are getting a long look at how they are selling. It is very easy to imagine dealers backing off orders if they aren't selling well
Conworld is a little less well known than it's more common and more reputable sister website, Coinworld.com.
It's pretty amazing that there's still some left from the 20,000. It's definitely affecting the flippers.
I'm new to buying from the mint, and relatively new to the hobby. Seems like even the long- time collectors are stumped by how this release has played out. Is that the case, or am I reading too much into the posts I'm seeing?
It happened before on the 2013 ASE sets with those type of cancellations. This just played out quicker
Those were a bit different being mint to demand (with a 4 week ordering window). I would say this 2017 enhanced set is a new case with some similarities (dealers not seeing room for profit and then bailing on large orders).
This crap from the mint is no different than the colorized coins from the 2bit littleton or wtf'ever mint. Flippers and collectors of this nonsense deserve each other.
I see the similarities in the sense that it just played out faster. The one major difference being the ASE set was well done and the mint to demand killed the demand, where as this one seems to be people backing off once they saw it. Certainly a fair point about the different ordering procedure
