The baseball ones with the Baltimore show labels did very well which I guess gave the idea for the mint store labels. You are right the gold Kennedy was when the various store labels really started as one company went after them especially hard having flown around to all the stores and was paying people to buy them for them
I just realized this... the star tiara originates from the Roman goddess Libertas. At first I thought it was completely arbitrary and a bad novel design element. I still don't like the design but now it makes a little more sense. Anyway, her statue can be seen atop the US Capitol Building. The same figure is also shown on the 1989 commemorative silver dollar.
Yes, that was what it was just very poorly executed and loses all connection with a complete redesign like they did
Neat background story on the US Capitol statue! And, I will double down on the 'sure looks like you could pull one of the stars off and throw it like a ninja weapon' appearance.
I was lucky to have the opportunity to watch proofs of these being struck at the Philadelphia Mint. The staff put great care into striking them and carefully examine each with a glass, rejecting them for even the tiniest flaws. Even the rejects were gorgeous. I, for one, like the design and appreciate that the Mint is finally making an effort to recognize that not everyone in the US is of northern European ancestry.
The design was also used on our first federally issued $5 bill [Demand Notes of 1861] and on the first issues of Legal Tender Notes [1862]. It was also used on souvenir cards issued for the 1991 FUN show and the 1991 Chicago ANA.
Anyone know of lower/dropping prices for these yet??? Anywhere??? Will this one be included in the 4pc. set???
