That why you should use them. If they ask when I give them a half dollar. I tell them to keep it and pony up another 50 cents
I don't have a problem with Maya Angelou or any woman being featured on these coins. The obverse design is amateurish at best. The reverse is a little better, but these designs are just junk. Stop using a computer and get some artists back.
wow, ugly as sin..lol anyways, my bank says due to the coin shortage, nothing coming in from brinks, they chaecked all rolls for me the other day, no shiny at both end, they will call if some arrive, told em would take a 500.00 box of them, and of halves if they arrive
yall will get used to it, jeesh, nothing changes when things change, there's always a bunch that don't like the change, people griped about the state quarters change also ("spaghetti hair" I think) , the shield cent, the jefferson nickel obverse changes, at some point in the near future, it will normalize and not bother you, and hey if you still don't like it, at least it's 4 years and not 10. that time will fly by.
I pay more attention to circulating coinage. But I don't think my opinion would have flip flopped. Crappy art is crappy art even if it's made out of gold.
I like and appreciate it (the obverse), the history behind it, et al...and much better than many if not most of those other obverse designs that could have been selected (they were posted here several months/a year or so back).
Indeed agree...will be looking to buy one of these if I can find a decent one in OGP for sale after 23 years...I missed out in 1999 plus wasn't a gold guy then (still not, but Washington is an exception). Without yet knowing or looking up this coin's commemorative purpose, will assume it had something to do with the 200th anniversary of his rather quick, untimely death on Dec 14, 1799.
And this ain't it. Fraser's design, the one on the new quarter, was unanimously chosen in the original design competition for the 1932 quarter, but that decision was overruled. This isn't a "bad modern design". It was contemporaneous with the one we've been seeing since 1932. Most people who knew art thought it was better than the design that was chosen, but the politicians who had the final say rejected it. Think really hard about your reaction to this design. You, of course, are the only one who can say what art you do and don't like. But are you truly offended by its artistic merits or weaknesses, or is it just that it's different, and therefore bad?
The mint started turning out the '22's in November 2021. They are shiny but ugly! Gotta love um, they are still American made!
The likeness of George on this coin reminded me of a guy in my 9th grade class who we talked into joining our junior high team. We went through every helmet in the senior high locker room and never found one to fit his big head. His nose stuck out past the facemask on the largest one.
I have to apologize. I didn't realize the obverse was created by sculptor Laura Gardin Fraser (1889-1966). So my comment about using a computer to make these designs was unfounded. However, I still am not a fan of the obverse, however I am looking forward to seeing the coin in hand.
