I wonder if the CCAC gold selection was too close to the platinum bullion coin (flying eagle, sun with rays). It was the better selection, though, as the rays go with those on the obverse.
I stopped buying the overpriced junk that the US Mint produces decades ago. As far as wanting gold and silver bullion coins, I buy the classics.
New design, old design, makes little difference to me as I won't be buying any. If they come out with a really good design based upon some of our older coins, I might change my mind. I do love the Walking Liberty obverse, but I am not talking about just using an old design, I want to see a true designer come up with a new design along the lines of some of the older coins, not just a copy.
Well, sure. It's why people will buy such stuff, "Well, OK, I gotta pay double to have a complete set."
The best place for the Mint to hype these next issues is on the home shopping network coin collecting shows. Lots of super hyped pretty much uninteresting commemorative special issues at super inflated prices.
Investors/collectors will pay what it's worth to them. if it's not worth it to you...then by all means move along!
It's very plausible that the entire ASE issuing of 2021 will be a full box of 20. 4 mints, 2 reverses, no fewer than 5 finishes. That would be 40 if all mints did everything, which they won't. Then if you want to pile on the special TPG labels that'll go along with it, you could have over a thousand "different" ASEs for next year.
No, not stupid just greedy. The Mint knows that collectors will create a frenzy to get the old designs for 2021, and then scramble for the new designs as well.
To be honest, I'd never thought of it that way until I posted that -- but as soon as it occurred to me, I knew that was a big part of what bothered me. Of course, that's not what's being depicted in a heraldic eagle, any more than ancient Egyptian art depicts people that have been squished flat. But I really, really prefer naturalistic renderings.
