I found this quarter the other day. It has seen better days but when examining it I noticed that it looks to be a die break going under the E in E Pluribus Unum
How does a scratch go from one side of the letter to the other with out damaging the letter itself. If it is a scratch then it must have been on the blank. Cause a scratch done after the design is made it would be going over the lettering not under the lettering
So how can a coin with incusing lettering show signs of Doubling. Cause to me it would be harder to have an incuused lettering to have Doubling compared to the old raised lettering. I am not arguing with you I am just trying to get some more knowledge and understanding of the process better. For future sakes.
The scratch was on the planchet before the coin was struck. Once the planchet was struck it will look exactly like your photo. Fairly common.
