James Naismith invented basketball in 1891. Why is basketball being commemorated in 2020? Maybe I don't understand the thinking behind commemorative coins.

 

The coins commemorate the Basketball Hall of Fame, founded in 1959. I just noticed the winning design does not mention it (the Hall of Fame).

 

Yes, once something works well once keep using it again and again so it is no longer "special".

The Apollo 11 coin is the only commemorative that I've purchased from the mint in the past 30 years. I have this feeling it will remain that way.

 

1970? Walt Frazier and a beat up Willis Reed led the Knicks to the championship over the Lakers with Wilt Chamberlain and Jerry "The Logo" West. I was 12 and remember watching that one. That's a commemorative I could get behind. (just kidding, Congress, in case you're reading)
