I'm not gonna pay the U.S. Mint $55 when I just want the reverse proof cent. Looks like they're going for $19-$22 on eBay... I think I'm a-gonna wait awhile 'til the prices come down a bit... not sure what price will make me bite, though.
It seems the hobby is bifurcating to a point, what I'd call "classic" collecting vs. modern collecting. The mint (and the tv coin shows) are pushing the modern collecting angle. Overall, I think its good, brings more collectors into the hobby, but coins minted specifically to be collected, well, no telling how they'll hold up over the long haul. Seems to me that classics have more intrinsic value and greater rarity, even with small modern mintages. The coin shows have that reverse proof lincoln slabbed in 70 and a price tag of $149, whereas you can get the entire set directly from the mint for $56. Now that doesn't guarantee you a 70, but honestly, I think every one of those coins will grade high.
Got mine today. Mint did a better job of packing and also not making a crappy scuffed coin. Pics are through the plastic so ignore the slight blurriness.
@Michael K Two different departments. The coins are minted at the West Point Mint then shipped to Tennessee for shipment.
They probably won't hold up a danged bit, but the new blood this type of thing attracts could generate and manifest more serious collectors for the future.
