https://www.usmint.gov/news/press-r...r-breast-cancer-awareness-commemorative-coins The article describes it as "the nation’s first-ever pink hued gold coin". Also first pics of the designs are up. I found another non-mint article talking about it at http://www.marieclaire.com/health-fitness/a13066082/breast-cancer-commemorative-coin/ which describes it as "the Mint will be using a special alloy combination that will give the gold coins a pink tint, something it has never done before."
To me another US mint product that was poorly done. France did it much better. https://www.coinworld.com/news/worl...r-awareness-circulating-2-euro-coin.all.html#
Should be interesting to see what the prices are like, since the fineness of the gold has to be far less to get the color right.
It has to be less fineness to get the pinkish color. I have heard it could go as low as 10K gold or even less.
https://www.usmint.gov/coins/coin-medal-programs/commemorative-coins/breast-cancer-awareness-gold Looks like you were right. Lower weight at a lower fineness. Probably priced the same
Side note - the French "Ruban Rose" coin was issued in two different versions. The regular one (mintage 10 million) has no added color; the proof version (surcharged, mintage 10,000) comes with the ribbon in pink. The US design looks good to me too, except I would not have put the butterfly on both sides ... Christian
That French coin is so much better than what the U.S. mint is doing. Honestly the U.S. coin looks more like it's in honor of Butterflies than breast cancer awareness. French U.S. mint
Oh good god. No question. Whatever that is that the US is doing, France beats by a country mile. The French coin design is so elegant. Who would think that has anything to do with breast cancer if not for the ribbon. And do butterflies get breast cancer too? I'm confused. The US mint is becoming one big joke.
85% gold? They must know something nobody else knows if they think they can get anything but a very subtle pink tone out of 85% gold. Keep in mind these are the same Einsteins who didn't understand they couldn't make the 2016 centennial gold dime, quarter, and half the right sizes based on the announced weights.
The butterfly has become a cancer survivor symbol...but I agree it is an odd design. The US Mint has been pumping out uninspiring coin designs for years now just to produce a profit. Most of the modern mint products don't do it for me (a handful I love)...this one is no difference. I am curious to see how the color looks though.
I have to admit that when I was complaining about the "convex coin" novelties for baseball and the moon landing, I wondered whether they would consider the obvious convex design for this...
