The entire surface of the coin is polished. Have you ever seen a brilliant proof coin from the 1950s or 60s? The entire surface is polished, even the devices. These are made that way, only after the polishing, they laser etch the fields and leave the polished (incused portions of the die) undisturbed. You need the accuracy of a laser to do this, that's why this is only something that's been done in the past few years.
Yes. You described that already. I then expressed surprise that what they polish the die with can get down into the incuse parts and do such a nice job of polishing those hard to reach places. I couldn't be more clear I thought but I guess I am not.
They use a mandrel to polish the coins. It gets into all the nooks and crannies, but you can't polish the nooks and crannies without polishing the fields.
They use to do it by hand. They polish the die, mask off portions of the die to remain polished, then sand/bead blast the rest to give the surface a frosted texture.
But speedbump, that process only works when you polish the fields and have the device is frosted. It does not work with this enhanced finish
Thanks they look better than I thought. I'm sure if they were sold individually on eBay would go for a lot more. I might just have to buy the enhanced quarters. Decisions decisions.
From the photos posted so far, the S-mintmarked enhanced uncirculated coins look similar to a 1994-1996 set of Australian $10 silver coins for Olympic gold medal winners--an uncirculated set that has an appearance of reverse frosted surfaces.
@Johndoe2000$ Your welcome and a welcome to the others that said thanks. Who knew that they would still be available even now after the quick unavailable. I jumped immediately for 5 at 7:30 am, then jumped for another 5 at 7:31 when still available. The first five was to help CT'ers who may want one, & so was the second five,...small potato's I know but was thinking about you good folks. Now what am I going to do with those 10 extra sets? Hopefully I can do what I usually do. Keep them in the sealed box and place on the pile. Thinking I might be more a hoarder then collector . Or maybe I will do something I have never done. Open them up, pick the best and return the rest. Feel bad for all the folks that quickly purchased on the bay. For those who did and there is a return policy, return the darn things. The guy who had sold over 60 sets for high 50's low 60's, when I looked two days ago, would certainly drop a load. Cheers
Your post definitely caught me by surprise for sure, I appreciate it. Your intentions (and mine) of grabbing a few extra sets for our fellow Talkers is nice, and thoughtful. At least we'll be able to help out a few folks if needed. Thanks again for the heads up.
Wonder what made them decide to enhance water but leave the 'sky' or back ground flat fields normal. Would have looked nicer if they have enhanced that on them as well. Just more from the mint showing that they don't care about collectors or have any idea what we'd like. Even stranger that the enhanced uncirculated Native American coins from the past few years actually look decent so it's not like they didn't have a template or anything for what the other coins could look like.
I missed out on ordering the set on Tuesday but I signed up for an alert if they became available again. i received an alert today and was able to quickly order one at work today. Thank you US Mint. The 'small' collector should be able to order things like this.
You are correct I should have said some, but that some is a large enough group to make an awful big noise. These sets were produced as a way for the mint to make some more money. What happens to them after they go on sale, and who buys them the Mint doesn't really care and long as they get paid.
@Heater thanks loads for the heads up. Good show, man! You made several people here very happy. I am grateful to you for the heads-up!
