Very worn quarter. Not struck through grease. Looks like it was in a parking lot for a while.

Agree the 1979 quarter is only environmental wear and damage.

However, the 79 quarter, toned like it is, is very pleasing to look at. My collection revolves around eye appeal rather than grading system. Eye appeal and found in the wild are my primary criteria.

I couldn’t agree more!! Eye appeal to the individual collector is all that matters. Collect what you like, that’s what what makes this hobby unique and satisfying!

I'm a bit late to the party, but better late than never! ;)

Your 1979 quarter is definitively toned, nicely toned IMO.

That said, can we separate toning from environmental damage? Probably not, toning occurs naturally over time and it's mainly the result of oxygen and/or sulfur reacting with the coin's metal. This process can be accelerated by heat, moisture and many other variables present in the environment. So my answer to your question is "both".

The 2016 is probably a roadkill.

I can't imagine why you fell asleep. Lol
The first one is damaged from wear and tear. The second one has a dark toning. As I've said before, it's your collection and only you determines what goes in it.
