I've had so many setbacks in my life, that if I couldn't inject some levity into the everyday parts of it, I would probably go insane. After military service and divorce, bartending was the best thing that ever happened to me. I got to look at the funny things in life in a much broader spectrum. I'm not trying to disillusion the young collectors about the hobby, but I do think it is important to wake them up to the reality of what is valuable and what is not. We keep getting the novice collectors asking, "What is this worth?", but they don't realize that a coin, any coin, is only worth face value unless someone is willing to pay more for it. As for melting coins, I have never advocated this whether there is a law against it or not. But, someone has to wake the uninformed collectors up to the fact that the 95% copper Lincoln's are not worth their weight in copper. Actually, they're worth less than face value. Refiners will only pay about 25% of the price of Grade A copper because the copper has to be extracted from the alloyed coin. I think you might have misunderstood about melting coins. A lot of people refer to junk silver based on the going price. It is often called "melt value" or even "spot price". Both have the same meaning, but these collectors are not really advocating melting the coins because like many of them, there are others who would be happier than a pig in slop to have these coins in their collection. I hope this helps! Chris[/QUOTE]
