Wow thank you all for your input! I am learning so much here! It amazes me how much effort someone went through to damage this coin, just for it to end up in my till at a truck stop in Montana. I am still keeping it with my collection, with my other oddities I have found over the years.

BTW, Welcome to Coin Talk. I live outside of Helena on a mining claim, so we are almost neighbors. LOL

I would say so! Butte here. A friend of mine worked at Gabe's for years in Helena and collects as well. His collection puts mine to shame. Customers bring in their silver and proof coins to spend often at that store, I get jealous of his finds!

Being a hermit off the grid, I don't get to town often and am not familiar with Gabe's so will have to look it up and visit next time I get to town, which is about once a month.

It is a convenience store on Cedar Street. He has some good finds working there. A lot of silver.
Same friend is into gold panning and rock hounding...as am I. He even found little gold nuggets while digging a driveway in East Helena. I get so jealous of his finds. Lots of gold in that area still to be found. I assume that is what you mine on your claim since it's close to Helena?

This cent just plain funny to look at. You can enlarge a cent by putting it between two layers of leather and pounding it larger, commonly called a Texas Cent. Of course you then have those machines that elongate cents and many that elongate & stamp them with other verbage/scenes.

It's the same on the other side, flattened oval shaped. Oddball coin I still kept it.

    No scenes, just oblong obverse.

Hey, paddyman98- can you tell me what may have happened to this coin? Pictures are meh, sorry. The quarter appears pitted, it’s very smooth, a lot of letters are very faint or missing, and looks like an intention near the back of Washington’s head. Appreciate your experience
