I hope the US Mint publicizes these 50th anniversary issues to the general (non-collecting) population whether or not the series ends in 2014.
I don't know how greedy they really are. An ounce of gold is $1316 right now. Their costs to make the coins are more than the cost of the metal and they do need to turn a profit. I wonder what their profit margin on these actually is...I'll bet it's not much.
At $99.95, I think I'm in for 5 sets and a couple of the clad sets at $9.95. I think the silver set will rise in value. It feels like the hype is beginning to well, hype.
But if they don't limit the mintage, all this hype shall only make them hyper common. If they produce 75,000 or less Silvers I'll empty my piggy bank.
I started a 25 year experiment in coin values last week. I did my bit for the 50th by buying two graded silver proofs: one PF70 and one PF69. I want to know how the values diverge over the next 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, .... years. I paid just over $50 for the 70 and under $19 for the 69! Rob
I have heard some rumors but still no official release date yet for the silver set. We may see 3 separate release dates for each of the 3 (gold, silver, clad) sets. IMO, it would be nice if the silver set is released after ANA Chicago, so the number of special labels is minimized. Given the different finishes, mint locations, and the number of coins in the silver set, etc., it would not surprise me to see a September or even later release. TC
These 3 Kennedy Half 50th Anniversary sets may greatly increase interest in this series. It is now a very easy and relatively inexpensive series to complete. The series really has something for everyone: 90% silver, 40% silver, numerous varieties, a special mint set specimen coin, bicentennial issues, and soon a reverse proof, an enhanced finish, a 0.999 3/4 ounce gold version, etc. Even though the most recent years are NIFC, you can also still find some older dates at banks if you ask nicely. The JFK Presidential golden dollars and Jackie O gold spouse coins will also be released very soon. If the series ends, this would likely only increase the interest even more. I am not talking necessarily about bringing new collectors into the hobby, but existing collectors looking more at this series.
