It looks like this "guy" never placed his order. According to an article in Coin World, which was also quoted in Coin Update, one dealer placed an order for 6000 sets at the New Orleans ANA Show. They were lead to believe this was the largest single order placed so far for the item. The total from that show was 7100 pieces. The current total on the mint site is 206,226.
Can you imagine if one party really did order around half of the total minted? They could essentially control the entire market for that one coin.
It wouldn't be the first time something of this nature occurred. Anthony J. Swiatek in his book "Encyclopedia of the Commemorative Coins of the United States" refers to one such happenstance which took place with regard to the 1935 Hudson Sesquicentennial coin. He mentions that two dealers nearly bought out the entire run of the issue........ "It is believed that Julius Guttag of Guttag Brothers, New York City, acquired approximately 7,500 pieces at 95 cents each, and that Hubert W. Carcabla of St. Augustine, Florida purchased 1,000 Hudsons at the same price". The entire mintage for the issue was 10,000 pieces and many appeared in the aftermarket at greatly inflated prices. Many collectors were miffed, to say the least..........
that's what I'm going to do, just one set. I got 2 of the '06, big profit, and 2 of the '11, big profit, but only 1 last year and will get 1 this year. the mint to order policy means no real upside IMO. I'm waiting a couple days 'till the 13W unc goes on sale then getting all the mint ASEs on one order, one shipping price.
