    Hey guys -

My name is Richard and I am new to the buillion world. I have a question, what is the difference between the 2012 Kookaburra and the 2012 Dragon Privy? With a mintage of 80,000 will the Dragon Privy carry a premium in a few years? Thanks :hail:

    Hi Richard,

The difference is the dragon privy has a miniature dragon struck on the kookaburra side of the coin. Pay no attention to the projected mintage, as the Perth Mint has recently proven they are willing to increase those numbers as easily as a person changes clothes.

The privy is basically a marketing gimmick to sell more of a certain coin after the initial interest in the same coin without the privy has subsided.

Having said that, if you don't have the regular 2012 Kookaburra yet, I think you wouldn't hurt yourself too badly by purchasing the dragon privy. They are selling for about the same price online.

Kookaburras in general tend to sell for a decent premium and tend to maintain that premium. This trend may change somewhat, however, as the collecting public absorbs the Perth Mint's recent tendency to re-mint Kookaburras from previous years.

All things considered, though, I don't think it would be a bad idea to purchase this, especially if you the like coin on its own merit, which I do.
