This is one of the very few coins that managed to excape the theft of our family coins a few years back. I sent it out for grading and it came back with anice PF68. It is one of my favorite coins.
Neat. The archaeopteryx skeleton threw me for a sec. I assume the scratches over SOLNHOFEN must be on the plastic.
For a moment, you see, I saw the bird (eagle) on the obverse*, and then another (very dead) bird (archaeopteryx) on the reverse, and thought it was a before-and-after thing! Come to think of it, I suppose it IS a before-and-after thing, except the dead one came first, and the live one later. So it's all good. *I'm calling the eagle side the obverse, despite the way the coin is holdered, since common convention usually holds that the side of the coin that names the country or bears its national symbol is the obverse. (I see that Numista agrees with me.)
