I agree that the mint uncirculated sets are a good way to go (I'm on subscription for 20). Here's an interesting scenario... There's been talk since 1996 of either eliminating the penny and nickel or changing their composition to steel. http://www.gao.gov/archive/1996/gg96153t.pdf http://ohmygov.com/blogs/general_news/archive/2009/08/20/u-s-mint-still-losing-hundreds-of-millions.aspx The CoinStar machines in many banks and supermarkets has reduced the need to supply banks with fresh coinage. It's my understanding that this is the primary reason so few nickels and dimes have been minted in 2009. So here's an unlikely (but very slightly possible) scenario... Congress decides to halt production of the penny and possibly the nickel. The reserves they have on hand (to include the 2009 issues) are melted. Billions more are destroyed as the public turns them in. All of a sudden, the 2009-d nickel is more rare than the 1916-d Mercury dime. ...wouldn't that be cool? Also... Here's an interesting link...check out the "2008 Tax Free Gold Act"... http://www.coinnews.net/2008/04/30/2008-congressional-coin-bills-by-name-and-number-4060/
