It&#039;s my understanding that this is the primary reason so few nickels and dimes have been minted in 2009.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>So here&#039;s an unlikely (but very slightly possible) scenario...</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Congress decides to halt production of the penny and possibly the nickel. The reserves they have on hand (to include the 2009 issues) are melted. Billions more are destroyed as the public turns them in.
