Sellout For Sure! Buy 'em while you can...

I have exactly ZERO commemoratives in my collection-I've never been drawn to them. THIS coin I am drawn to, for a variety of reasons: First of all, I think the design is absolutely stunning! Lincoln looks great (and distinct from the penny portrait we've had for the past hundred years). And the words on the reverse still ring appropriately in today's tough world environment. I think those words are powerful enough that they actually "work" on this commemorative. I predict this coin will offer a huge return on investment to anyone who decides to hoard a few (Yes, I will be among them!). As a collector, I've never "speculated" and purchased multiples of a particular issue in hopes of its value going up. But I'm telling you, this one will! Here's my reasoning:

1. We just welcomed our nation's first black President, and he's a Senator from Illinois ("Land of Lincoln"). He was sworn in on the Lincoln Bible (only president to be sworn in on it besides the man himself). Lincoln is considered to be the champion of emancipation.

2. We are celebrating the 200 year anniversary of Lincoln's birth. And the 100 year anniversary of the Lincoln Penny (and 4 new reverse designs to collect!)

3. 500,000 total. Yes, other commems don't always sell out. But the popularity of Lincoln, combined with the above items, sounds to me like we are in the "perfect storm," if you will, of opportunity. Factor in the 50,000 issue Proof set with the four pennies, and that's another hot item I'll bet goes up in value quickly.

Once the general public catches on to these items, I'm predicting there will be a frenzy, which will drive prices up. I'm certain some enterprising folks will come up with an expensive Lincoln-Obama coin set (did you guys see those awful Obama "dollars" with a color sticker over a Presidential Dollar people have been hawking? UGGGHHH) to sell. A friend and I have an over/under wager on the sellout of the Lincoln Dollar. We set the bar at 4 months (I took the under, boldly stating to him "waay under").

I read today there is a limit of 100 coins of each type (proof & unc) per household. While I'm not THAT big of a speculator, I'm certainly going to grab a few extras. My recommendation to anyone who might invest is to consider the uncirculated ones (they will almost certainly be the lower mintage, and therefore more desirable later on).

So, while I have no way to "guarantee" my speculation is correct, I will say I personally will be standing in the digital line at noon on the 12th to place my order. I'm betting a few others of you will as well. Good luck!
