That was me. I spent some pennies from a collection (my gramma's penny can) and when I got caught, I tried to find replacements. That was 45 years ago. I'm still at it.
One of my favorite posts! We all grow up, and when we do, we see the light. Also reminds me of a little kid that wanted penny candy in the jar at the local store. Not to try and be psychologist, but you probably grew up successful, doing whatever it takes to get what you want, and a good person because you try and corrects your wrongs. Sorry, I'm off topic, but this sort of reminds me of me too.
elain 1970 , Where are you getting 2009 mintages from ?? I am going to purchase a $100 face Kennedy bag from the Mint if you are correct.
mintage report is from the u.s.mint. 2008 is the lowest. 2009 is very popular. that is why the mint added 2,000,000 each mint mark.
Hi Eliane, You sure know alot about Kennedy's. I have a question a little off subject. Can you tell why the Kennedy's had only %40 silver from 1965-70?
Thanks elaine !! The only other Kennedy to come close to the 08 & 09 mintage was 1987. I'm hoping the series ends soon , which would increase value of these coins. They haven't been in circulation for about 8 years
I can answer that one because I lived through it, like a lot of the older collectors and dealers on this forum. And I buy and sell a lot of Kennedy halves! Silver prices were rising back then, and coins were getting hoarded for numerous reasons. So after 1964 all 90% silver coins (dime, quarter, half dollar) were no longer made. A 90% silver half dollar (unworn) contains 0.3617 ounce of net pure silver. But the silver price still made a net-40% Kennedy half feasible. After 1970 even that would have made them go into the melting pot, as they still contained 0.1479 ounce of net pure silver. The longer answer to why a coin shortage occurred is more complex and includes the spread of automatic vending machines and coin telephones, the dealer-to-dealer Teletype system which spurred speculation in BU coin rolls (remember the 1950-D Jefferson nickel and the 1960 Small Date cents?), the introduction of the Kennedy half which ironically increased hoarding, and other factors.
due to increase price of silver during those days. the mint have to decrease the percentage of silver from 90% to 40%. if not. then the face value of kennedy half should be $1.12 each.
What do you think of the 1957 proof set elaine1970 ?? I like the proof wheat cent & Franklin half dollar.....
2008 kennedy 2 roll/set - 33,413 2008 kennedy 200/bag - 9,701 total pieces sold - 3,276,720 max mintage - 3,400,000 2009 kennedy 2 roll/set - 37,876 (not final) 2009 kennedy 200/bag - 9,245 (not final) total pieces sold - 3,364,040 (not final) max mintage - 3,800,000
Elaine: Do you have mintage figures for all years of the US Mint wrapped Kennedy Half 2 roll/sets (P&D)? Not including bag numbers and not including other Halves' mintages. ONLY roll set figures for each year. Thank you.
Thank you for that answer. Why did the dime or quarter go to 40% those years? Read more: http://www.cointalk.com/t46638-7/#post807040#ixzz0esa5Rx1a
I assume you mean why did they NOT go to 40% like the half dollar did. Well the government wanted all three coins to go to the copper nickel clad composition but the silver industry lobbyists applied pressure to try and keep silver in the coins. The use of the 40% silver clad composition was a compromise to still have some silver in at least one of the coins and get the support of the silver producing states Senators and Representatives for the clad coins.
