The building under construction looks fine to me, although it is probably too detailed for a coin that small. What I find peculiar is the lowercase "of" which is used in that design but not the others. Huh? Christian
Designs 1 and 2 aren't horrible (they're not great either). Designs 3 and 4 are pretty much worthless. I'll probably only get P and D singles like I do everything else. I don't think they're worth going all in for my collection.
You know, I was thinking that exact thing. 1909 and now 2009 wheat-back v.d.b.'s. It'd have to be a special set, as you said (couldn't be a business strike, like the 1909's...unless, of course, they'd let me buy the first few boxes at face ). Just to commemorate the "mistake" it all started on...
I bet you are glad you ordered that '82 washinghton. And yes I am completely bummed they are not doing a one year S-VDB wheatback too. The choices they made all look to much like commems. ( I know they are supposed to be circulating commems, but I think simple would have been better.)
Guess that many coin collectors are conservative also when it comes to design (or maybe art, architecture, music, language ...). Sure, there are some contemporary coin designs that I don't appreciate either, but whenever I read generalizing comments like "modern coinage is usually bland", I won't even argue. Those people can collect coins that they like, and I collect what I like. Christian
There are a couple private mints out there capable of doing a good job of making one. Hopefully, someone will do so and the government will object because it look too good.
Well, I'm going to stand out from the crowd. I can't complain. I don't think they're that bad. They only had 4 coins to work with to present his entire life. The only one I'm not really sold on is the final one with the capitol building. I think he should have been depicted in a civil war scene as president for the final one. But somebody probably didn't want to end the series on that dark of a note. As in an unsettling reminder of the war. The capitol being built you have to admit is a much more positive note, but to me kind of detracts away from him and is more like a commemorative for the capitol. I think they missed the mark on that one. I do like the one with the old capitol building in Springfield. Been there several times. That was a good idea. Will the 2010 have it's own new design?
Has anyone heard any official word about the possibility of 95% copper proofs in the silver mint sets? I know there was some rumors and hope they would.
It's supposed to but I would rather see the end of the cent instead. If the cent does continue in 2010 the reverse design is supposed to symbolize Lincoln's holding together of the Union. How you are going to represent such a widespread and abstract concept I have no idea. Especially since he didn't. The south did leave the Union, war between the two countries broke out and the south was defeated. Then the INDIVIDUAL states had to "jump through hoops" in order to rejoin the Union. If they had to rejoin, they must have left. But this reunification took place after Lincoln was dead. Lincolns plans for the reconstruction of the south and its reunification was much more "forgiving".
