Teddy Roosevelt Quarters? If the Mint puts Theodore Roosevelt on the obverse of the National Park Quarters as was recommended, will it become a new series? Will Washington Quarter collectors move on to something else?
Taking George off of the quarter would be a BIG deal. It would be like taking Lincoln off of the cent.
Sholom, the number of these coins minted has nothing to do with the popularity of the subject or the population of the honored area. Also, the value of the coin isn't dependant on the number of Guamanian collectors - This is a US coin, issued throughout the country, in the numbers ordered by the Fed to meet the needs of commerce. The DC and Puerto Rico coins don't have low mintages because people don't want to collect them, but because the banks don't need quarters right now. The population or popularity of each state had no influence on the number minted, and the subject of the individual coins within the series has little or no impact on the after-market value. Those saying they are tired of all the new designs obviously were never interested in coins in the first place - only in turning a profit.
I agree with pretty much everything you are saying -- although perhaps I was a bit unclear about what I was saying. There are some people that collect all the quarters, but there are some who collect, or hoard, or throw in the jar, only coins that interest them. People from state-X might save some quarters marking their state, and not save any other quarters. Now, perhaps I am off base, but I suspect that _demand_ for PR quarters will be higher than for Guam quarters. Further, I suspect that while the number minted is not connected to its popularity -- it's possible that the number put into special sets are. I certainly don't know this to be true, but that has indeed been the pattern for this year. Specifically: - the LP1 Log Cabin rolls sold out quickly (96K made); and the LP2 rolls have already sold over 200K and not sold out yet. - the DC Quarter Roll mint sets sold out fairly quickly; and the next coin (PR) had a larger number of sets produced (and not sold out yet) Does that mean Mint will make fewer Guam sets? Perhaps? I dunno . . .
Now, THAT'S a question worth having an answer for. If only my crystal ball wasn't out for repair... :goofer:
