Alright, it's finally December 1, 2010 and that means it's the end of the 2009 Investment Challenge which was started up by mikenoodle (even though it probably should have been the 2009-2010 Challenge). Since the old threads don't bump this new discussion thread was necessary so we could all catch up and post our final results. Here's a link to everyone's list of holdings for the competition: http://www.cointalk.com/t82242/ Here are links to some of the previous discussion threads: http://www.cointalk.com/t79338/ http://www.cointalk.com/t82243/ http://www.cointalk.com/t91425/ Anyways, here's how my $10,000 portfolio is doing at about the halfway mark: 40 x 1908-S IHC in G04 - $70 each x 40 = $2800 8 x 1909-O Quarters in AU55 - $600 each x 8 = $4800 160 x 2009 FS Silver Eagles in MS63 - $31 each x 160 = $4960 Total value = $12,560 I had a decent value increase on the G04 1908-S and an even better result with the Silver Eagles given the huge jump in silver prices over the past 12 months. Unfortunately, there was no move in the Price Guide on the 1909-O Barber Quarter in AU55. I openly admit that I even lobbied PCGS to update the prices on this one,. David Hall even emailed me back and told me that he knew the prices needed some updating and that they were working on it, just too bad for me they didn't get to it by 12/1/10! For reference an XF40 example sold on eBay this week for $1276!!!! And since BNB was banned and can't post his results, his update is: 555 x 1986 Silver Eagles in MS63 - $31 each x 555 = $17,205!!! How about the rest of ya?????? Can anyone top BNB????? Or was silver the best investment play over the previous 12 months?? Mike By the way, anyone up for another challenge??? Maybe start it 1/1/11 and let it go until 12/1/11????
Can't wait to see the results! Having another year's worth of experience under my belt, I'd give it a shot for the 2011 Challenge.
Wow, totally forgot about this contest. A whole year has gone by? I doubt if mine has appreciated much at all. BNB's numbers are gonna be hard to beat. Seems silver was the way to go.
We were using the PCGS price guide, right? Well, on the two commems that I picked there is now a "+" designation for each grade. Using just the regular mint state designation without the "+" I come up with this... 1900 Lafayette commem MS-65: $12,000 (+) $3,250 1937 Antietam commem MS-66: $1,200 (no change) 1994 ASE MS-69: $57 (+) $7 $3,257 appreciation in value..... Better than I first thought.
well, for the record (and I expected this) I got my rear-end kicked. We have to give BNB credit, his was far and away the best of the investments listed. It was a strategy that many will tell you is NOT to be followed (putting all your eggs in one basket) but results are results. Yes I would love to do it again this next year. I don't mind looking like a fool as an investor. I have already for years!!! Illini420, do you want to run it this year?
oh, well: And mine: 2009 to 2010 Coin Investing Barber Dime: 1895 O: F-12 $900 $950 1895 P MS-63 $1,100 $1,100 Barber Quarters: 1896 S: G-4 $875 $900 F-12 $2250 2250 1913 S G-4 $1650 1850 Barber $1/2: 1896 S F-12 $220 275 1914 P F-12 $335 335 1914 P MS-63 $2,400 2400 1915 P F-12 $270 270 Total: $10,000 $10,330 better than losing.
Well I'm up on these: Lincoln 31s 64rd by $140 Buff 24s 63 by $100 Peace 27 63 by $$20 Not too good. But I'd try again
You started it up, so it's yours to start again if you wish. However, if you don't want to I don't mind doing it.
was thinking that some of us really took advantage of buying multiples of a single or a few low value coins that went up a huge percentage. I know BNB did it as a substitue for just investing in silver @ spot, but my investment in 40 1908-S IHCs in G04 could never really happen as it's a population 3 coin with none graded lower. Ever try to find a problem-free 1908-S IHC in good or lower... i've been looking for 3 years and have only seen one!!! next time around you guys think there should be a limit of how many of a single coin can be invested in??? or maybe even make it where you can only have 1 of each coin w/ no multiples??
it's all yours, illini420. I don't have the time to run it, but I would love to participate. That said, you can change the rules in any way that you like
