I'm sure this is no error, but a mere prank of sorts, but I have never seen this before. Not sure I have a question about it other than outside of the mint, what could leave such an impression in a coin like this?

You are correct. It's called a Counter Punch or Counter Stamp or Counter Mark Coin Google those words and you will see many examples. People have been doing it for decades! By the way.. Anytime you see anything incused into the field of a coin it's usually Post Mint Damage.
