Does anyone happen to know what the metal composition is on the presidential dollars? Thanks, Oz

Believe it will be identical to the dimensions and metallic content of the Sacagawea dollars (core of pure copper, clad layers 77% copper, 12% zinc, 7% manganese, 4% nickel; alloy usually called manganese brass, which has a golden color).

bqcoins, You really should come out of your shell and say what you think!

The mint is a cash cow for the government.

It's not about beautiful coin designs, it's about making millions of dollars.

I just wish some of that profit would be plowed back into the mint -- improving quality, lowering prices, establishing museums, etc.

Will get your wish this year... the $1 silver and $5 gold commemorative of the old San Francisco mint building will be sold to raise funds to convert it into a museum. So get nice coins and a museum out of it!

They did decide that the design format will be the same on each coin and I believe they decided to go with the form shown on the James Madison design with the dates and presedent number on the scroll.

I also wonder what will happen with the First Spouse coins for those presidents that won't appear on the coins or for those first ladies that are still living? The legislation says nothing about them having to be dead in order to be shown, so we could have First Spouse coins of presidentcies where the President doesn't get a coin, and we could have coins with living First Spouses.

I also think they should pass an addendum that would require them to issue President dollars for those who were passed over, once they do qualify. Keep the set complete.

``(5) ISSUANCE OF COINS COMMEMORATING FIRST SPOUSES.--
``(A) IN GENERAL.--The bullion coins issued under this
subsection with respect to any spouse of a President shall
be issued on the same schedule as the $1 coin issued
under subsection (n) with respect to each such President.

So, if the president does not qualify,no first lady coin.

That simply says that they will be issued on the same schedule as the President coins ie: four coins per year.

Excuse Me but Please Try Again

In defense of a fellow Tennessean, Polk was the only president to clearly state his goals, carry them out then quit after one term as he promised. He reduced tariffs, set up an independent treasury, setted the Oregon question and acquired California - the four points of his campaign. In the process he established the borders of the United States. That is pretty "notable" in anybody's book. Besides, like all conis the ones that eventually will be valuable will not be Lincoln, Washington or Kennedy but those that folks thought not "particularly notable" to collect. LOL

I'm glad smb posted that about Polk. That President was reportedly a "workaholic," putting in 15 hours a day and saying "no" to most vacation opportunities. Plus, right or wrong, we picked up the present southwest whilke he was in office

Just because he wasn't well known doesn't mean he wasn't important to the country.

I'm pretty sure that Santa Anna wasn't a Polk fan! In fact most Mexicans still consider the US sw to have been stolen from them.

    Cave Troll is correct.

However, Santa Anna isn't exactly remembered for being a shining example of good himself.

Point is, most all U.S. Presidents contributed something to the country, and there are stories to tell about each of them.

Yeah really. I almost threw up at reading the future president of 2018! This is how it is going to be:
    2017
    41. George H.W. bush, 1989-1993
    42. William J. Clinton, 1993-2001
    43. George W. bush, 2001-2007
    44. Dennis Hastert 2007-2009 (bush and Cheney both get impeached and sent to prison)
    45. Hillary Rodham Clinton, 2009-2017

    2018
    46. Al Gore 2017-

lol, take that to the Politics and Religion forum. No president has ever been impeached while his own party was in control of both branches of Congress, and likely never will be, that's just political reality. Al Gore is highly unlikely to ever be elected, if he even decides to run; he's blown whatever credibility he ever had claim to in the years since 2000.

Hillary is not an impossibility though... but again only presidents who have been dead for at least 2 years when their turn comes up will be eligible to be on the coins. I think Hillary has better than 11 years life expectancy left, as does Gerege W. and Bill Clinton. Ford likely does not, and it will probably be close for George H. W. Bush and Carter.

If the Dems win the senate in Nov they will impeach. Big if though but Peterson is gaining on Kyl (could happen).

OK - you can stop here and get back on topic, that means no more politics, or I'll close the thread.

Does anyone know when in 2007 the first coin will be issued.

I heard that it might be late in the year, rather than early.
