Hello all, I was in the bank last weekend running some change thru the coin star machine, and I look down in the rejected change bin and what do I see. I thought it was a dime but it turned out to be a 2006 Lincoln penny that is completely silver. It is in mint shape and it is non-magnetic and weighs about 2.5 grams. It is so shiny it looks like it was just taken out of a bank roll. I know in this year they were zinc with copper plate but this one looks like it missed the copper plate stage. What's it worth? ronvb
Pictures are worth a thousand words.... Seriously though, gotta see some pictures to be able to determine what it is.
Zinc is a dull gray color, not shiny and silver like. Your coin may have been plated. Post a picture, it'll help with a determination.
Hmm I would think if it was plated it would lose some of it sharp features and it would also weigh more than 2.5 grams? ronvb
Yes, plated. And, yes, plating adds so very little weight that, unless you have a scale that reads out to 4 or 5 decimal places, you won't notice the weight gain.
Oh well I have to dig out some other coins to post, magician silver dollar, error quarter, etc Thanks for your collective replies!
Is the magicians silver one of those coins with the very fine cuts and held together by a rubber band around the edge? I had a franklin half like that some years ago but have no idea where it is now.
I also have a post 1965 washington quarter that is two reverses milled into 1 coin with no obverse no date. This one I found while sorting thru a jar of loose change. When I flipped it over to see what date it had and saw another reverse I nearly fell out of my lazyboy!!
