Trying hard not to be insensitive, but you do live in Nebraska, and this coin looks to be damaged from excessive heat: i.e. fire damage. I commiserate with you and the entire state of Nebraska over their recent wildfires.
I agree with extreme heat damage. It affected the Cupronickel clad layer. It's not a mint error of any kind unfortunately.
