I got this quarter a few yrs ago...

    Among other things,

    - It looks to be a slightly off center w/ some splitting at the rim.
    - There is either doubling or extra metal around his eye
    - There is extra metal at the base of his neck that continues to the end of the bow (from split rim?)
    - A little doubling from head to chin that is viewable with a loop (Will try to retake photos of this)
    - A tiny part of the O in Dollar is missing
    - Also a little extra metal on top of the E in United and the S in States.

Thoughts on what might have caused this?

Hi Pittsburgh, Hope things are going well!

I see quite a few die cracks and chips on the coin. This is a common occurrence as the dies age. Especially in the areas you are talking about(neck, face, etc.). The doubling that I'm seeing is from something often called MD, and it comes about due to a loose die which shifts during the strike. The really valuable doubling to look for is from a doubled die where the die itself was doubled during the hubbing process. The best way to tell the difference is that MD is flat and shelf like, and if you subtracted it from the design, it would reduce the design element. Doubled dies will have splits and will add to the design elements.

    $.25 :)

It takes some time to educate yourself, but yeah, in my situation it's not worth even a $1.
