Maybe the proper strategy is to order more than you actually want and then return the loser sets for a refund. That will make a bad situation (chaos at the Mint) an order of magnitude worse !
I can't believe I'm still waiting for mine. The postal service needs to quit fooling around in the wilds of Wyoming, trying to find collectors such as OldDan, and get down here to civilization. I'm getting anxious.
Just received two silver proof sets. Quite disappointing. Plastic is cracked on both Satehood Quarters. Two inch crack on each, plus one inch crack on back side of one. Also, one of the Lincoln cents has a fine line of dings extending out from his nose. How is it possible to crack the plastic, and then not notice it?
Maybe it happened in transit. I figured out with my order that covering 150 miles in five days means they averaged 30 miles per day. I would therefore infer that the deliveries are being made by horseback. Now, if a horse slipped in a muddy gully and rolled, the resulting lateral tension stresses would induce cracks in the plastic holders exactly like those you describe.
Sorry Gary, but I told them not to stop at the silver dollar bar and lounge in Laramie. Guess the old horse must have got a snoot full. This time I would blame it on the U.S. Mail system for rough handling. I would like to think that even the mint would have caught such damaged products before shipping.
Received my 3 sets last week but one has to go back because of a bad quarter. I already had to return a silver eagle this year. They are no better than buying something on e-bay when it comes to shipping. You must pay both ways even when it's there fault. I do like the idea of ordering more then you need and returning the one's you don't want.
I think they actaully get routed from the mint to a central location in KY or someplace, then mailed out to wherever.
Yes, Bacchus, in the gift shop. My proof set had a big crack on the reverse of the holder under the Kennedy half....but the mint said return it and they will even re-imburse me 4 the entire return shipping cost, not bad
Right Tennesse,i was only one state off. From here it might as well be ALASKA. So that means my mint orders actually cross the country twice to get to me. I don't know about the mint gift shop but i'm going to check it out one of these days. The old mint building that survived the 1906 earthquack is still standing in downtown SF.(historical landmark) Whenever i look at one of my old S mint morgans, barbers or what have you ,it's a kick to realize it was minted just 5-6 miles from my home.
I was kidding about the gift shop. According to this page, the San Francisco Mint "does not accommodate visitors." http://www.usmint.gov/about_the_mint/mint_facilities/index.cfm?flash=yes&action=SF_facilities
