That is a greese filled dye its what happens when to much greese is put on the dye when the penny was struck i am suprised nobody here knows that
The coin that GH75 posted absolutely, IS NOT a debris (grease) filled die error. Note the comments that point out the rim is folded over some of the letters. Here is the explanation: http://www.error-ref.com/?s=dryer+coin BTW: The mint DOES NOT put grease on dies. Grease dirt, metal shavings, oils, etc can build up on the presses (as it can in any high speed manufacturing process). Occasionally, this debris can fall onto the surface of the dies and become lodged in the devices. Here is a link with a better explanation http://www.error-ref.com/?s=struck+through+grease Hope these help
Just to clarify, I commented on this thread like 8 months ago and know that its a dryer coin. I've learned a lot more since then lol.
Nothing wrong with your response. I figured that @Seanrocks was responding to your pic (hard to tell when multiple coins are posted over time) and wanted to let him know why it wasn't a debris filled die. Hopefully that was the coin he was referencing
This post has been resurrected more times than . . . well, I don't know, but mostly by newbies that are searching for answers. To the newbies - please start your OWN post, WITH PHOTOS, so members don't waste their time re-reading old posts.
Its not struck through grease, it was worn down by being in a dryer... Hence the name 'Dryer Coin'. A grease filled die would have the look of an indent or a missing part of the details on the coin. By the way, why are you looking at a 8 year old thread?
