    Hello,

I'm new to the group and coin collecting in general. I'm hoping folks can tell me whether the nickel I recently found in a 2005 mint roll is an error coin (strike through?) or just a damaged coin? The marks I'm writing about appear on the face of the coin and connect the letter "O" to Jefferson's face, and appear again on his eyebrow, eyelashes and under his eye.

    Thank you for your help,
    R

It has some damage but the details around his face i think someone was trying to create a hobo design.

IMO, you have a coin that suffered post minting damage caused by other coin edges which impacted it while the bin was being filled. See what others think.

    First, welcome to the neighborhood!

Unfortunately, it is post-mint damage (PMD). About the only person who can tell you how it occurred is the one who had it in their possession when it happened. To me, it appears that something skipped across the coin at high speed, possibly a Dremel tool.

Welcome to CT @R M Please remember that "Mint rolls" aren't done at the mint, but rather a third party, so getting a damaged coin in a roll isn't unlikely.

Understanding a strike-through is the impression left on the coin from something that was sandwiched in between the die and planchet when the two struck together to form the coin it's obvious those marks aren't strike-throughs. They're just plain damage.

Welcome, btw. It's nice to meet you. I'm Eddie. I'm a talking horse.

I've never met him personally but I did see him drive once. Funniest thing I've ever seen, a horse driving a truck like UPS.
