    Hi,

I used to have an account on here but forgot my username and password. So, I created a new account to ask about the 2004 Britannia.

I just won one on ebay and it is a nice coin. It has really been difficult getting nice silver coins on ebay... Anyways, this one came in a plastic coin holder than is square and the sides are glued down. I don't see any words stamped into the plastic. I'm curious if anyone has bought a new 2004 Britannia in the past and know what the mint packaging looked like. I would like to take this coin out and put it in one of my Air-Tite holders...but I would rather leave it alone if this is the original packaging. The seller wasn't sure.

I have only gotten the 2008 and 2010 Britannia new in the packaging...and this is definitely not that packaging. This is plain, square and glued together. I have attempted to upload a scan of the photo from the ebay auction. You can kind of see the holder here. Thanks in advance guys!!

Thanks for the reply! My 2010 was sent in a hard plastic holder from the mint. I guess they must come in different ways depending on how many the coin shop buys at one time. I'm guessing that my 2004 must be a holder that someone else put on it. I would think it would say something on it if it came from the mint.

first time. i also got one piece from provident metals, it was inserted a 2x2 plastic holder. i don't like it. i think the proof will be much better than the bullion uncirculated. it was a very lightly struck coin.

I put mine in an airtite. I think I may try ordering direct from the UK mint one day...

They come from the mint in sheets of flimsy plastic that just pop open.... you would think for the price of them that they would at least put them in plastic capsules like kookaburras come in...

try to buy 2010 britannia at apmex. it is only $24.99 each. but you have to buy at least 200 pc.

As clinne says, the original packaging is flimsy plastic.

I'd be tempted to put it into a nicer holder myself. I don't think there'd be any damage from leaving it in the plastic you got it in, if it's sealed well (as there is to just about all Royal Mint proof sets from the 70's, where the seal wasn't secure - almost impossible to come across such a set without toning to some degree or other).

They are nice coins, and what makes this series interesting is that they alternate designes in odd/even years. One series was just modified.

Even the gold Britannia'a are sold by the mint in these flimsy plastic holders.... You'd think that a £700 coin would come in something more presentable, or is it the Royal Mint is just to tight to buy something more suitable...

I agree. When I bought the 2002 and 2005 proof sovereigns, the plastic insert in the cardboard holders came out very easily (it was out of the 2005 one before I even opened the package). Mind you, very nice coins - the 2005 was the last gold coin I've bought, due to price - I'd got all the rest of my gold during 2001 - 2003.

Do you find the same with the early proof sets? Toning can get very severe with them, esp 1970 - 1979 range.

I took the 2004 out of the holder I got it in. I'm not sure if it was the original holder. The holders from the mint or really bad as stated. I think all the ones I have in the holder also have rubbing marks on the queen's cheek.

I wanted the whole britannia silver set so I got the proof 97 as well. Those coins have horrible toning on them. I guess some find that attractive though. I may have just gotten a bad set since I got it off of ebay. The coins were nice other than that.

I love the britannia's though! Wish I could get gold coins but just can't do that...
