2001 Half Dollar

Discussion in 'Error Coins' started by Robert Theroux, Jul 8, 2024.

  1. I have a 2001 Half Dollar that looks like it has a die break but other than that this coin looks like it might be a very high grade, I have looked at the pictures in the PCGS coin facts and other than the die break this coin looks just as good as the MS 68 they have pictured, now I am 77 and my eyes are no longer the best so I am hoping someone can help me out and let me know if the area pointed out as a die break is correct and does it make a difference in the grading.

I am attaching two pictures of the front and rear of the coin, I was having trouble with the lighting causing shadows so I am attaching an additional picture with the lighting turned off.

Thank You in advance for any and all help

Based on the images posted, it is not a Break.

I never opine on the Grade of a Mint/proof coin (and nobody else should, without seeing the coin in hand). However, there is an appearance of rub, and disturbed luster and chatter, and multiple contact marks, all issues that would preclude a Grade of MS/PF.
There is a hint of contamination but is most likely misleading due to the color(s)/lighting of the imaging equipment/phone.

Definitely not a die break. And I don’t think it would grade a MS-68 but it would probably grade a MS-65, maybe a MS-66.

This specimen shows the ear clash on the shield upper right corner. Just about a perfect circle.
The 2001 P & D halves were not released until 2009 in mixed mint bags of P & D coins
A good number of the 2001 p were spoon shaped to the extent you couldn't stack them one on top another...the stack would fall.
